Amazon Books – 3443 N. Southport Ave

Out of sheer curiosity we stopped in at the Amazon bookstore in Lakeview yesterday. The whole idea of the online retailer who put many small businesses out of business, including bookstores, opening brick-and-mortar stores, is bizarre. The store was everything one would expect – cold, uninviting, sterile. What other bookstores sell power drills and Instant Pots alongside bestsellers?

Opened in 2017, this was Amazon’s fifth brick-and-mortar store, first in the Midwest and first outside a shopping mall. It’s one thing if you’re in an area that has no other bookstores, but if you’re gonna buy a book in person in a city like Chicago, which has so many great, wonderful, warm and inviting small bookstores, why would you ever shop at Amazon?

lol that’s weird in fact… maybe it’s kind of marketing idea to say they love bookstores… cheers from Portugal, PedroL
